Camp sites in the Netherlands: a small country with lots to offer

Finding a camp site in the Netherlands is not difficult. The Netherlands is without doubt the country for camping. Not only do the Dutch themselves love to go camping in a tent, caravan or motorhome; there are more camp sites and camping amenities than in most European countries.

Camping in the Netherlands: surprisingly multi-faceted!

Camp sites in the Netherlands are to be found in all parts of the country. The greatest attraction has traditionally been the North Sea coast. The Wadden islands in the north are also a popular destination for a beach holiday or a holiday in the middle of nature. Right behind the beaches are the beautiful dunes, perfect for long walks or cycle trips.

There are however many camp sites in the east and south of the Netherlands. Close to lakes (and not just in Friesland) and ponds and rivers, wherever you go you will see water! The centre and the east of the country in particular have extensive natural parks: the Drenthe heath and woods, the Limburg hills or the beautiful countryside in Gelderland and Brabant. The Veluwe with its Hoge Veluwe national park containing deer and wild boar is a beautiful and thinly populated area. If you are on a camp site in this part of the Netherlands be sure to visit the Kröller-Müller Museum of modern art in Otterlo. As well as the beautiful and varied countryside, the many large and small towns are typically Dutch. Not only should you visit the main cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague (Den Haag) but you can enjoy the typical Dutch atmosphere of old towns such as Delft, Leiden, Alkmaar, Middelburg, Hoorn, Gouda, Maastricht or Volendam/Edam.

The camp sites

Below you will see an overview of camp sites in the Netherlands, on the right you will find more information about tourism during your stay in the Netherlands.

Kennemer Duincamping 'de Lakens'
Kennemer Duincamping 'de Lakens' - Bloemendaal aan Zee, Noord-Holland
De Lakens camp site is located in an unusual part of the province of Noord-Holland: in a series of hollows in the dunes 200 metres from the North Sea. There is a lovely wide beach here at Bloemendaal aan Zee, plenty of beach stalls but also quiet parts of beach. Bloemendaal is where the boulevard starts which extends to the famous resort of Zandvoort. Anyone camping at Duincamping de Lakens can enjoy two different worlds within a few kilometres of each other: the camp site is located next to the formidable Kennemer Dunes where you can wander endlessly and where you will come across foxes, deer and many rare plants. Just beyond the Dunes is the town of Haarlem, a place with all the charm of an old Dutch town: inner courtyards, lovely squares and many monumental buildings. Haarlem is also an excellent town for shopping; there are many charming little lanes with antique shops, trendy shops and good restaurants. The old Teyler's Museum is recommended. A city trip to Amsterdam is also very easy from here! The camp site has a pleasant cafe serving pub meals and plenty of attention is given to comfort with special pitches for motor homes, plenty of places for children to play and bike hire. Young people can camp in a special hollow in the dunes. So peace and quiet for everyone, right in the middle of the countryside!

You can rent bikes here for wonderful trips along the crunchy shell paths through the dunes. To the beach for example that is situated 4 kilometres away. Geversduin is also a perfect base for surfers, swimmers, sun-worshippers and other beach lovers. There is naturally plenty of space for walking or horse riding through the dunes and woods. The nature reserve after which the camp site is named, the Kennemer Dunes between Haarlem and Bloemendaal, has a surprisingly lovely and varied landscape. For great days out you should go to Keukenhof, the bulbfields with colourful tulips and the Zaanse Schans, a genuine piece of Holland in an open air museum with windmills on the Zaan waterway.
